I use laptops everyday for presentations and normally I would never buy a computer that costs less than $1200. Anything less than that and you're taking performance hits on all fronts; processor, RAM, graphics and hard drive.

This computer is not a workhorse by any means and it is ugly as only a mother could love.
That being said, this is what can you expect.

First things first, this computer only cost $549 dollars or less so I'm not sure where the harsh reviews are coming from. If you pay for a Ford Festiva don't expect Rolls Royce quality. I purchased this laptop from a local reseller, COMPUSA, in Florida so your specs may vary.

Flimsy plastic body construction? Check.
My G550 is matte black and has a raised texture pattern on the cover to help you grip it better. The plastic looks and feels as cheap as a low end DVD player that you can pick up at Walmart for $30 dollars. The screen does not have a latch to secure it but that is not detrimental to me. This computer does flex on the bottom but as long as you don't handle it like the "American Tourister Gorilla" you'll be fine. I can't substantiate the other reviewers claims that the DVD drive spontaneously opens because of the flex but it does open, as intended, if a misplaced finger inadvertently touches the eject button while carrying, as I have experienced.

Intel shared video performance? Check. Poor lcd viewing angles? Check.
**Shared video graphics is never the best option however, I use Corel Draw 13 and Corel Painter 10 and it runs those programs equally fine. It also runs TrialDirector, a special presentation software, surprisingly well for non-dedicated video graphics. I won't be running Maya, Max or any highend games on it so there is no expectation to be crushed on that point. This screen is great for direct viewing only. As for off center viewing angles? How often do you view your work on a laptop other than directly in front of the screen. I have been using it to watch DVD and Streaming movies on Netflix with no performance problems but the screen does darken and colors get distorted if you are more than twenty, or so, degrees from center.

**Lenovo lists this computer as having "Discrete graphics" => "Select Lenovo G Series notebooks feature a dedicated graphics processor and memory to provide superior 3-D performance for gaming or other graphics-intensive applications."<= This model only has 64Mb of "dedicated" memory then it can use as much as a Gb of your system memory. I'll let you decide if that constitutes "Discrete graphics."

Windows XP Professional loaded? Check. Windows 7 Professional 32 bit on disk? Check.
I highly recommend setting this computer up to dual boot, keeping both operating systems intact. The version of Windows 7 Professional that came with mine supports "Virtualization" or running a virtual machine to run XP apps that don't run under 7. Unfortunately the G550's T6600 processor doesn't support virtualization. Setting up a dual boot is the only way to have your cake and eat it on this laptop.

Large 15.6 inch screen? Check. Fullsize keyboard with numeric pad? Check.
While this beast will never be a desktop replacement it is better than a netbook because of the screen size and CPU. The keyboard is fullsize and typing in numbers on the numeric key pad is a plus for me. The only flaw I find on the keyboard is the placement of the Function key is located to the outside of the left Control key which is counter-intuitive to the better quality laptops.

This Lenovo G550 is considered their "value line" series so don't buy this and expect too much and you will most likely be pleased with the performance. Check out my uploaded images for detailed performance specs and decided for yourself.
